From the time she won the ‘Color the Bunny’ contest at five years old, my sister knew she was destined for the graphic design world. Now she’s a partner in her own Honolulu-based firm, Mozaic. Between promoting a plethora of the islands most posh resorts, they create exotic paper goods. To welcome the Lunar New Year of the Dragon, her team has designed a laser-cut card that transforms into a lovely luminaire. Customer Darla asked us to let her know when the fresh fall colors of Trois Petits Points Paris lockets arrived at Momo. Today the postman swooped in with a hand-addressed box containing the marvelous medallions in surprisingly pop colors, swinging from bright gold 30-inch chains, so here they are. From left: purple, bourgogne, moutarde, peacock bleu, noir, rouille and taupe. The true colors are a bit more subdued, with the purple looking a tinch violet and the rouille (rust) not quite so orange. Altogether it’s another happy statement from artist Emilie. Let us know if we can set one aside for you.

Meet Malia Peoples, the hapa honey who puts her own spin on Harajuku fashion with a Pacific Northwest twist. She’ll be mingling at Momo, sharing her sustainable style sensibility during our last blast of the season. In keeping with our happy*lucky*life, we’re fortunate to host the busy Lady Konnyaku — clothing designer, artist and teacher/mentor at New York Fashion Academy.

The rest of the neighborhood will be hopping with activity, too, as Japantown joins forces in creating summer fun. The long-anticipated 519 Art Studios (519artstudios.com) will be opening, featuring a new gallery, Prole Drift. Participate in a painting party at the Cullom Gallery, attend a show at Kobo or get a spontaneous tattoo at Tiger Tiger. Plus discover other eats and treats, all around the block. As the lights go down, the Main Street stage will showcase music and performance art, culminating in the showing of Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle. Spam: The Movie

Finally, the movie that’s on everyone’s summer Hot List — Spam-O-Rama. After one month of intensive editing, our media department is ready to release the Hawaii-style food adventure. Slated to show at Sundance and Caan, we’re giving our loyal customers a sneak preview. And as an added treat, we’ve pestered Miko, innovator of the featured fried musubi, into sharing her recipe for a new classic. In her own words, here it is.

Spam-On-A-Stick
Skewer fried Spam onto stick (we used bamboo chopsticks)
Use a sushi bamboo roller and roll it with rice and nori on the outside (make sure the whole thing is secure! It will be kinda heavy)
Heat up oil in a pan (we used canola oil)
Dip your Spam-roll-on-a-stick into tempura batter (ration: 1 egg + 1 cup soda water + 1 cup flour), then into panko breadcrumbs
Put into hot oil and cook until the batter is golden

Yesterday, while the big art relief event was being held at Kobo next door, a smaller, yet equally special story of generosity was being told at Momo. Giddens’ grade schooler, Sabine, came to us with $70 in bills and $5 in pennies that she had collected on her own, for our donations jar. When asked about the pennies, Sabine replied that a donor mistakenly thought she was asking for pennies instead of dollars, and gave her 500 pennies. Yes, Sabine, as your T-shirt says, Life is Good, especially with sweet souls like you in this world.

Lately I’ve desired to take a break from the usual double-short-2% latte, and along comes entrepreneurial Seattleite Jillu Zaveri with delicious chai options. Which do I love best? The Cardamom or Masala? Saffron or Ginger? And I’m dreaming of Vanilla for summer iced-tea times. Just add water and the gratification is instant: smooth and slightly spicy sweet, the flavors of Jaipur Avenue could easily become my new addiction. Instead of striving for what isn’t, the Rabbit’s contemplative mood will have us appreciating what is, whether that is good health, a loving family, or devoted friends. In this hour of contentment, we must refrain from self-indulgence and procrastination.

A reality check will have us hop to it, ensuring that we continue to take care of our self and the business at hand. In the year of the lucky Bunny it may seem that money’s not as tight, parking is plentiful, and everyone is a wee more relaxed. Intimacy is our carrot as human relationships take the spotlight, from one-to-one romances (Rabbits crave companionship) to issues of global heath and poverty. Culture, arts and entertainment will flourish as the refined Rabbit always enjoys an evening out. Paradoxically, we will continue to be concerned with living green while not skimping on life’s true luxuries.

The other day I received an email enquiry from across the world — an enterprising Swiss-Vietnamese jewelery designer found Momo on the the blog of one of our vendors, Trois Petits Points Paris, purveyor of beautiful French enamel lockets ($88). Right now we are clean out of them, awaiting a shipment just in time for Valentine’s Day. We love the sleek and simple oval that opens up to reveal secrets inside. And the colors, trés fabuleux! We are the only shop in Seattle and one of few in the U.S. to offer them. As for the other jeweler, well, who knows, we may soon be showing a collection fresh from Switzerland.

The cycle of retail goes on and as we end the year at Momo, we bid adieu to another Momo girl, Ms. Jessica. Originally, she was a loyal customer, buying bunny hats and scarves (she’s the Princess of Accessories). Then, lucky us, she applied to work here and became our resident Japanese girl (she lived in Japan for awhile). Through the year, she’s helped many a shopper pick the perfect gift, and on more than one occasion, garnered a little Momo PR in local magazines. Now, she’s moving on to pursue a career in publishing. We wish her only the best and hope to see her on the other side of the counter at Momo. Gambatte kudasai, Jessica-san!

What goes ’round and ’round an always keeps you cozy? A stylish Infinity scarf from Tuesday Scarves. Super-soft and hand-sewn by local lovely Rian, we’re lucky to be able to share them in a gazillion colors. Rian sources and utilizes end pieces of fabric, coming up with fresh ideas for new styles, always keeping us guessing as to what we’ll see from her next. Glad Bags: Leland’s been chiding me about being ‘pouch happy’ and he’s right — the charming, utilitarian bags of Baggu make me feel good, like I’m getting organized (finally)! Made of lightweight nylon, they can be put to work toting your stuff around the block or across the world. This week we received three styles: the Set of Stripes two zip pouches for smaller shoes and such (blue/white thin stripe and bold blue/blue, 12 x 10 inches, $13), Leland’s pick, The Big Baggu that can hold three bags of groceries and comes with its own zippy pouch ($15) and the XL Elephant zip pouch for boots, swimsuits or tees (16 x 12 inches, $8).

To each her own: A box load of Girlbands has arrived at Momo and we’re having fun with the multitude of choices. Zelda opted for a rusty red variation while Leslie demonstrates her pick of black eyelet and Jessica tames her tresses in a be-ribboned Betsey Johnson-esque style. In another happy/sad story, GB creator Carolyn is moving on and will not be producing the versatile hair accessory, hence our stocking up ... so jump on the Girlband wagon while you can. Good luck, Carolyn!

We love French dressing, especially comfy, kawaii Cop-Copine Paris. Lines are distinctive and colors neutral. This makes their clothing especially versatile, plus the materials travel well and the fit is undeniably flattering.

Parallel Thinking: There are certain personalities who take delight in stripes and Momo is one of them. Perhaps it’s the harmonious continuity that we find so pleasing. Or maybe stripes are a bold statement, looking fresh no matter what the incarnation, in this case a Metalicus one-size-fits-most (yes, we said it) tank dress for $109.

As I enter my 51st birthday year, I’m vowing to simplify and one way is to start with our Momo blog by removing two tabs. These memories are so lovely — like the post about Kevin — that I want to retain the information. So here it is, just in case you might ever want to revisit.

When Tom and I opened Momo, two words we said we’d keep in mind when seeking merchandise are ‘fun’ and ‘interesting.’ Add to that, ‘charming’ and you’ve described traditional wooden Japanese kokeshi dolls. I can’t resist collecting them when I can, and Tom, too, has come to love these rare dolls as only a grown man can — appreciating them for their craft and learning how the shapes, colors and expressions vary from prefecture to prefecture and throughout history. This cute couple, in pristine condition, was once a giveaway from Japan Airlines back in the glory days of flying.

On the subject of hapa, this Sunday, Diane took Tom and me out to her favorite new brunch spot, Nettletown (2238 Eastlake Avenue East; 206.588.3607; nettletown.com) where the food deliciously reflects chef/owner Christina’s mixed heritage of Chinese-Swiss. Opting for breakfast, I ordered potato-onion pancakes topped with poached eggs, sided with a bed of raw greens and generous slabs of bacon ($11). Ever the yang to my yin, Tom partook of lunch, happily gnawing the elk meatball sandwich that so many on Yelp have raved about ($11 with salad). Veggie-girl Diane slurped a bowl of noodles blanketed with baked tofu and greens ($8.50) while bf Paul dittoed Tom on the elk meatball sandwich. For sure I will be back — next time earlier in the day — to sample the sold-out fried rice and tantalizing salad I spied at the next table.

The Momo Man: confident and just a wee quirky, as embodied by devoted customer Kevin. He trotted in one spring morning declaring that he needed socks to warm his chilly toes. After picking out a pair of striped Pantherella, he was officially decked in head-to-toe Momo garb, from New York stingy brim, to Saint James sailor shirt and Blake jacket (except the cargo shorts ... we remain a pants-less shop). Kevin, you are a marvelous Momo poster boy.

Into everyone’s life, a little Rain must come, and lucky for us, this little ray of sunshine dropped by on her way to Maneki. Rain and her daddy were meeting a few friends and bought thoughtful omiyage for everyone. Only five years old, she selects her own clothes, including the scarf she so nonchalantly tossed about her neck. At Momo, we love stylish shoppers of all ages.

Day one of Kyoto Art and Antiques (5790 Airport Way South; 206.381.9871; kyotoartandantiques.com) 11-day warehouse sale was a madhouse, more enthusiastically attended than ever. The secret stash opened up Thursday, April 29 and runs through Sunday, May 9, every day from 11 - 7. Within the brick walls of the Georgetown jewel box, you’ll find myriad rare tansu and treasures from Japan, China, India and points beyond. If you go, be sure and dress for the occasion: warm, comfortable clothing that doesn’t mind the dust, and of course, shoes for the urban archeological adventure. If you miss it this time around, owners Jay and Kyoko will be back again come fall.

That’s how we started recycling — first with bags contributed by Lala’s Jazzersisters, and now with surplus stash from our customers. With the slow economy, ad budgets are the first to be cut and businesses need to think of more clever-than-expensive ways to get the word out. At Momo, we recruited two of Seattle’s finest underground artists — ‘Sidewalk’ Sammy and Denise-the-Niece — to graffiti our walkway, thereby literally stopping shoppers in their tracks. The bold and colorful graphics are done in chalk, reminding each of us of the ethereal nature of life.

Koichiro Aikawa, the master behind Anomaly Structure

One thing I decided during our all too-short two week stay in Kyoto is this: Japanese are good at staying on a path, whether it is a stroll through the temple grounds or one to enlightenment. Perhaps it is discipline, or that the paths in Kyoto are so pleasant, why would one stray? It is on the meandering walkway from the north end of Arashiyama heading south that I discovered the out-of-the-ordinary boutique, Anomaly Structure. Tipped off by Momo customer and frequent Kyoto visitor Marilyn Tsuchiya, I had my eyes open, yet was still surprised and delighted when I came upon the very special atelier of Koichiro Aikawa.

In Japanese sprinkled with charming English, the self-made designer carefully showed me around his shop, sharing his ideas and exuberantly explaining his technique in creating everything from bronze necklaces to leather belts with hefty cast metal buckles, to garments with raw-edges and fluttering asymmetric lines, each hand made and truly unique. “I make my clothes so that a woman can wear for 10 years, not throw away next year.” He is dressed in a drapey cotton top and deconstructed vest, reminding me (in a handsome way) a little of one of Robin Hood’s merry men, a long-standing look indeed.

Recently destined for a new scarf, I reached for a swath of cloth in black contrasted with my new favorite shade of taupey brown (so Japanese)! “That is a no-category piece” Aikawa-san says to me shyly as he swaddles me in the yards of fabric sewn together at a right angle, demonstrating how it can be worn numerous ways. I immediately love it, throwing it over my shoulder and admiring how it adds instant finesse and of course, goes with what I’m wearing. Even the picky husband admits that it is worth the 8,400 yen, equal to about $104 US.

“Are you going to get them for the store?” Tom-san asks me. Although I wish I could procure the one-of-a-kind pieces, even in our select shop of Momo, the most interesting element would be missing: the passion and personality of Aikawa-san as he’s on his personal path to adding a bit of anomaly to our sometimes too structured lives.

Meet Kokoro

Heart, spirit and soul meet in Kokoro, local illustrator Toni Yuly’s kawaii creation, shared here by our little look-alike customer, Meryl. Kokoro, reminding us a wee bit of a Japanese kokeshi doll, makes her boutique debut at Momo. You’ll find her (and friends) on blank cards big enough to write your loving message, women’s tees and cute-as-a-button buttons. Many thanks to the Happy Hour Hooptinis for stopping traffic in front of Momo during our August JamFest. Popeye and Birdie showed us how to hoop it up as they gently gyrated with hoops on hips. Cars beeped and passerbys jumped through hoops to be a part of the summer fun.

Yet the potentially deadly delicacy continues to grow in popularity as kamikaze diners play Russian roulette, leaving their fate to the knives of skilled sushi chefs. East Meets Fest

KimonoFest turned out to be one of our most omoshiroi (fun) events at Momo, with many an enthusiastic guest dressed by kimono expert Yuri and embellished with Thea Starr’s exotic kanzashi hair adornments of vintage kimono fabric. Good sport Gretchen got into the spirit in full regalia, even topping off Ms. Monica with Thea’s lovely hair pins. Midori and Nobue honored us with their charm, and as an unexpected delight, we were graced with a sidewalk showing of the Ai Yai Ice Queenistas, bedecked in Maria Antoinette-ish paper ballgowns. France meets Japan — so Momo!

Summer Black

What the heck, we’re sticking with ‘if you can’t beat ’em ...’ and heading back to black. The other day, cutie couple Lisa and Jesse both walked out of Momo clad in their new jackets to stave off the summer chill. One of the first to discover our Samuel Dong trench ($173), Lisa loved the zipper pulls and hidden hood zipped into the collar. BF Jesse was tickled that our Bench sweater jacket ($134) accommodated his long, lean frame without added bulk around the middle. Where the heck is Boulevard Park? An unknown neighborhood of Seattle, it’s on our radar as the workshop location of our favorite husband+wife bagsmiths, Chemical Wedding (chemical-wedding.blogspot.com). Last week, Tracy (the She) came through our door laden with bags, all custom-made for Momo. We’ve carried the satchels since we opened 2-1/2 years ago, and they keep getting lovelier with each order (both the bags and Tracy+Jon). Meticulously made of post-industrial scrap leather — some beautifully burnished by hand — wood and/or hand-forged findings, you can be pretty sure that every one one is unique. At Momo, we feel fortunate to be able to carry such special creations ... and we’re always happy to share.

The functional furoshiki, historically used for bundling and carrying daily needs, makes an eco-chic statement in this rendition from Majikiriya. Lucky us! Last Thursday, for Take Your Daughter to Work Day, our boutique was visited by two young ladies who wanted to experience life at Momo. Grace (at left) and Tess (on the right), spent a few fun hours learning about retail. After a quick Q + A, the two set about to spiffing up the shop, dressing dummies and designing displays.

Jessica gave the eighth grade girls lessons in presentation, getting the table ready with a colorful Mother’s Day theme.

Thank you, girls! Maybe one day we’ll be honored to have Tess and Grace working with us for real.

A couple of months ago, the lovely Yuri Kinoshita of Umbo gave me one of these super cute Chirimen bears for my big birthday and since then, he’s been the keeper of my new Mini Cooper keys. Since I love him so much, I thought I’d buy a few to share with our Momo customers. He has movable arms and legs and is so well-made — perfect for adorning a cell phone or as in Japan, a handobaggu. He comes in black or purple and is an appropriate gift for the person with everything ... except a kimono clad bear.

An Artist’s Gift to Grandma

Meet Little Shirley. Topping our list of more-thoughtful-than expensive gifts, this hand-thrown clay vase is crafted locally by Lauren Burman to honor her best-friend grandmother who recently passed away from cancer. We first spotted the demure vessel perched on the window sill of our new favorite office-on-the-way-to-Momo, Cortona Cafe (2425 East Union Street; 206.327.9728; cortonacafe.com). A quick Google search lead us to the truly touching story, and now Momo has the honor of bringing you these personal vases. The tiny treasure measures no more than three-inches high and comes in 12 tertiary colors, making it a fresh compliment to a Seattle spring blossom.

Functional, fashionable + fun: three F-words that we use to describe our Momo Girl goods. This week a tiny box arrived from US-made Only Hearts. Out of the carton sprung twenty pieces of clothing, including this wrinkle-free reversible jersey tank and skirt, testimony to the travel-savvy nature of the brand. Jessica and I dressed the twins to show off the possibilities of black to heather grey and back again. The tee-shirt-like material is ultra-soft and comfortable as well as slightly sexy. Add a nod to spring with a few Luachea blossom brooches, toss on a dread + pom pom scarf and we’re ready to go.

Lucky us — this morning Thea Starr, former Rollergirl, hapa hottie
and mama of four arrived at Momo with a huge Tupperware full of her charming flower ornaments made from vintage kimono fabric sourced by her Auntie in Japan. She let us paw through her handcrafted cuties and pick the ones we love — so hard to narrow down the choices! We eventually settled on these and more ... and we learned our local Starr’s blossoms have recently tamed the tresses of movie stars Mira Sorvino, Julianne Moore and a couple of Twilight girls (knock ‘em dead, Thea).
