Enter the Year of the Postponed Pig! - Now on Saturday, March 2

Kung Hei Fat Choi! Lunar New Year is nearly upon us! February 5th welcomes the Earth Pig, characterized by its friendliness, compassion, enthusiasm and occasional self-indulgence.

In Chinese astrology, the Pig is the animal of wealth. According to astrological charts, 2019 will be a good year for investing – in all things, not just financial. The Pig attracts success in all spheres of life!

Join us in the International District/Chinatown, as our neighborhood shares its abundance with a number of fantastic cultural events to ring in the New Year:

Wing Luke Coloring Contest! Kids 12 and younger can compete for an $800 prize.
The Wing Luke Museum will start things off this year. Festivities for family fun can be found at their Lunar New Year Celebration and Fair, Saturday, February 2nd from 10 - 5 at The Wing (719 S. King St). Tickets are $17 for adults, free admission for students and children. Watch lion dancers, create crafts with local artists, explore the stuffed animal petting zoo, take a trip through the museum and much more!

The entire neighborhood will be hosting another celebration, this one on Saturday, March 2nd from 11 - 4. A free community-wide event, it features lion and dragon dances, cultural performances like taiko drumming and martial arts demonstrations, a piggy parade, costume contests (check out the make-your-own-pig-mask contest) as well as arts and crafts booths for the kids. As always, the ever-popular $3 food walk will lead you to tasty discoveries at select restaurants all around the ’hood.

And don’t forget to stop by the neighborhood shops while you’re in the area. You never know what delightful treats will surprise you!

Piggy Fun Facts:
  • Some famous pigs include: Ernest Hemmingway, Alfred Hitchcock, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Arnold Schwarzenegger,  Lucille Ball ... and our very own Momo Mama, Lei Ann!
  • Pigs are most compatible with Tigers, Rabbits and Goats
  • Lucky numbers are 2, 5 and 8
  • Adult pigs (of the porcine variety) can run up to 11 mph. That's a seven minute mile! Their squeals can also exceed 110 decibels ... which is the volume of a supersonic airliner. Piggies also rule the roost on Big Major Cay in the Bahamas. They love to swim out to boats, hoping to cadge a treat or three. So cute!
