It Is Well : Clothing With a Cause

More and more, we are seeing an increase in the number of companies that are devoting themselves to social consciousness. Ranging from giant corporations like General Electric to tiny owner-operator business (like Seattle’s own Kitten Mittens, who donates a percentage of her sales to a local animal shelter), a focus on helping those in need is becoming more prevalent.

Allow us to introduce you to L.A.-based clothing company It Is Well. We love their simple silhouettes and easy-to-wear fabrics ... and we are especially thrilled with their mission to bring clean drinking water to communities in need all around the world. 10% of It Is Well’s proceeds go to generosity.org, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building wells in areas where potable water is scarce.

Momo just received a mini collection from It Is Well, and we think you’ll be as pleased with it as we are. For starters, although they are calling this pieces a “long sleeve button down shirt dress,” we think this piece also looks terrific worn as a duster.

And for the pinstripe lover, we have a matching cropped pant:

Classic pinstripe cropped pant. We also stock this
super-soft boxy sweater in a dusty rose pink.

What happens when you combine these? Fabulousness!

For a more Japanese-esque look, we love pairing this kimono top with the triple layer gauze pants. Sugoi, neh!

So, if you’re thirsting for interesting new style with a purpose, let us introduce you to It Is Well. We think you’ll like it. See you at Momo.

Fittingly Beautiful Nifty Gifties

Are you stymied about what to get ... and for whom ... and where to find ... that special something ... and how to gift wrap it ... in a creative and beautiful way?! Whew! Lucky you ... Momo has got your back with thoughtful gifts that are sure to fit. Take a quick peek at a few candidates for little-to-no-guesswork gifts for the ladies in your life.

Made from 100% yummy cashmere, this Margaret O’Leary travel wrap is an elegant, lightweight (yet warm) layering piece. Measuring 77" x 28" it’s big enough to be worn in a multitude of ways. Versatile and gorgeous? Yes, please!

Sumptuous cashmere wrap, shown in “Hurricane.”
Momo has an assortment of easy-to-wear colors!

The Original Vienna Snow Globes from Austria are the sweetest little holiday treat. Direct from the very first company to make them (circa 1900), these are still constructed entirely by hand in Vienna.

Original snowglobes from Vienna. The tiniest are barely over an inch tall!

Local designer Little Teal’s bullet stud earrings are subdued, stylish and special. Handmade in Seattle, they feature colorful natural stones in sterling silver settings.

Teeny stud earrings with a variety of luminescent stones.

Patrick Cahill is a silversmith based out of Boston, and for the holidays, we’ve put together a collection of his sophisticated cuffs. We love the simplicity of his designs, which feature clean, modern lines and flawless finishes. Entirely fabricated by hand from sterling silver, Pat’s only electrically powered tools are his buffing machine and his flexshaft (picture a Dremel on steroids).

Flawless construction are a hallmark of Pat’s work.

As always, we at Momo are more than happy to gift wrap for you! Our signature wrapping (utilizing vintage papers, found objects and other assorted ephemera) will surely impress your friends and family (especially if you tell them that you did it! We’ll never tell!).

Momo Kimono Mania!!!

Meet the Makers of Modern Kimono
Tuesday Scarves and Saltaire Life at Momo
Saturday, August 26th from 3:00 - 5:30
Kimono is making a comeback! In an easy, wearable way. Pop it over jeans and a tee by day, or drape it over the little black dress at night for a confident style statement. To prove our point, we've invited two designers to share the merits of their contemporary kimono: Rian Robison of Tuesday Scarves and Jancy Quinn of Saltaire Life. Meet both these local lovelies at Momo Kimono Mania!

Hand-dyed Tuesday Scarves kimono

Tuesday Scarves
Made right here in the International District, each kimono is hand-sewn of lightweight rayon and hand-dyed with professional-quality fiber reactive dyes in a variety of custom-mixed colors and original patterns. The minimalist shape creates a beautiful drape, and the rectangular cut produces little to no material waste by utilizing whole pieces of fabric without scraps from corners and irregular cuts.

Flowy, feminine florals from Tuesday Scarves
Inspired by a recent trip to Paris, and a love of Japanese textiles, Rian spent the last year and a half researching, experimenting and developing the original dye techniques featured in her latest line. Each piece is created from scratch at her Tuesday Scarves studio and storefront at 608 Maynard Avenue South next to Bush Garden.

Vintage kimono redux from Saltaire Life
Saltaire Life
East meets West in this line of authentic vintage kimonos embellished with dramatic and whimsical patches and artwork. Each kimono is a one-of-a-kind statement piece, with new offerings released every week.

A gallery of varieties from Saltaire Life

Saltaire Life was started by childhood best friends, one on the east coast and one on the west. The name Saltaire is a word, or not a word – it is a town from 1850's England, home to several textile mills, and it's the feeling you get when you breathe in fresh ocean air. Saltaire Life is dedicated to curating and creating custom offerings based on a love of textiles, apparel and sustainability.

Whichever kimono you crave, come and see the show during Hai! Japantown. There’s more fun to come, watch our blog or check Japantown Seattle on Facebook for future information. Ja Matta!

Saturday, July 29: Zuri Kenya Pop-Up 12 - 2

Join us in welcoming Sandra Zhao, 1/2 of the Zuri Kenya team, as she flies by Momo on a brief trip to the Northwest. The concept behind Zuri is #justonedress — for work, for play, for travel, for life. With 3/4-sleeves, a button-front, and an easy swing style that hits at about the knee, The Dress can be worn as said dress, a light jacket, or a tunic. But what truly gives it the one-two punch is the fabric: mid-weight cotton in delightful colors and patterns designed and printed in Kenya.

Backstory: cute customer and tastemaker Meredith came to Momo raving about a dress she recently read about in the NY Times (our shoppers are readers)! My curiosity piqued, I followed through, contacted Zuri and ordered a few dresses. A few days later, Sandra reached out, said she was coming to the Northwest for a wedding, and asked if we would like to host a last-minute trunk show. Heck yeah!

See you soon for the fast fun!

Light Up Your Night ...

...  and someone’s day, with a shadowbox fresh from the Portland studio of Sparrow and Sundry, a most delightful way to create a gentle glow anywhere you like. Illuminated with an LED and powered by batteries (we always give you extras), these little cuties can be placed wherever your heart — and eyes — desire. Each one is unique, hand created by graphic designer Jen Amos who began making the boxes from leftover wood scraps after her kitchen remodel. The charming scenery is laser cut and set with tiny figurines, from bunnies in the woods, to souvenir-worthy Space Needles, to the super special limited-edition kokeshi girls and cherry trees from Japan. Love!

Most shadowboxes measure 3" x 3" big.

Memories of the Northwest: Orca spotting!

Spring Scores at the Momo Good Fortune Sale

“That’s the way the cookie crumbles!” is a good thing when it comes to our Momo semi-annual sale happening for the next two weeks. It’s our way of offering you incredible deals while making room for new goodies ... and, as the proverbial THEY say, “Early bird gets the worm!” But then again, we often randomly mark down new items, so it’s all a fun game of chance, with every one a winner. Here’s how it works:
  • Decide that you need to go home with a SALE item.
  • Bring said SALE item to the counter.
  • Pick a tasty, crunchy fortune cookie out of a jar and open it.
  • Inside is a special fortune giving you an ADDITIONAL 10% - 30% OFF THE SALE PRICE.
  • Eat cookie. Do not eat fortune.
  • Leave feeling stylish and smug for saving money.
Hope to see you at Momo soon!
