Momo for Mama

Mother’s Day is rapidly approaching (May 10th)! Put a sparkle in the apple of your eye with a burst of color for Mom on her special day. A vibrant accessory will add a spot of cheer to your mother’s wardrobe — and put a smile on her face.

Warm her heart with a super soft, subtly shaded scarf by Woven of Walla Walla.  Kim Nemeth hand-looms these ethereal accents from silk and bamboo blends, making them a perfect gift for those who find wool or cashmere to be itchy.

Fiddlehead fern silk and bamboo.
If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the years, it’s that moms appreciate sweet, thoughtful jewelry. Momo has an entire case of lovingly hand-crafted pieces in a vast array of vivid hues.
Vintage Czech and German glass from i. Ronni Kappos.
Wee enameled whales by Seattle’s Flora and Fawn.

Delicate Japanese seed bead necklace by LA artist Kyyote

So many colors!
And fresh from Amsterdam, our Sticks and Stones handbags are a veritable rainbow of leather. We’re especially fond of the coin-purse inspired cross-body bags.

Please stop by ... and in addition to inspiration and/or advice, we also offer fancy and fanciful gift wrapping! Happy Mother’s Day, with love from Momo.

Come Celebrate Children’s Day at Momo!

Save the date: Sunday May 4th from 1 – 4 Momo will be celebrating Kodomo no Hi or Japanese Children’s Day with local author Toni Yuly and kids’ clothing designer Helen Shor-Wong of Growing Marigolds.

Toni, a Seattle native and local librarian, will be here to sign her delightful new book Early Bird (Feiwel & Friends/Macmillan). Early Bird is a tale about an early-rising bird and her morning adventures searching for breakfast. Full of sweet, colorful illustrations (Toni studied painting with the famed Jacob Lawrence) this is a terrific book for wee ones and older ones alike.

Good morning!
Teaming up with Toni will be Helen, creative mastermind behind Growing Marigolds. Helen’s children's clothing is made from grown-up fabrics for tiny tots. Repurposed and local (hand-made in Columbia City), these teeny togs are not only supremely cute, they are socially responsible.

Loving attention to detail.
Come say “hi’ to these lovely local artists while enjoying homemade cookies and milk this Sunday!

Three Cs for A Rainy Tuesday

What do Candles, Cashmere and Collectables have in common?
Aside from starting with the letter “C,” all three feature fresh arrivals
at Momo.

For Sweet Petula soap lovers: locally-crafted Sweet Petula candles.
Now your favorite fragrances can delicately scent your home. We have Bourbon & Vanilla, Vintage Peony, Wildflowers & Honey and La Nuit. Yum!

Giftable, fragrant candles by Sweet Petula.
Delightfully creative Jen Gay has brought in a fresh batch of her Kitten Mittens — ever so soft, her fingerless gloves are made from recycled fine wool/cashmere sweaters, with vintage trim and buttons. A portion of the proceeds are donated to P.A.W.S. Warm and fuzzy mittens help warm and fuzzy animals in need.

Keep your hands toasty warm in the cold drizzle.

Mr. Momo and Momo Mama recently perused the treasures at Kyoto Art and Antiques and found some truly stunning pieces. Here are just
a few of the beautiful antiques they discovered:

Regal bronze Kirin dragon. It symbolizes prosperity and serenity.

Elegant white marble Buddha head from China.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered

It wasn’t that long ago that writing a letter — a real letter with a real pen on real paper — wasn’t considered anachronistic. In these digital times, however ... it’s a different story. Now days, it’s a rare thing for many of us to receive a letter or card (barring the obvious holiday cards, of course).

Wooster & Prince stationery
Having said that —who can deny the sudden surprise, delight and happiness that seeing a hand-written missive in the mailbox evokes? It’s like getting a little present. A thoughtful, hand-made one, at that.

teNeues card sets are too cute
Momo can help you bring a little ray of sunshine into someone’s life via a card, a note, a letter. We have an assortment of cards: letterpress by Smock, sweet sets from teNeues, stationery from Wooster & Prince as well as a wide array of single cards.

Don’t forget a pen! Sakura blossoms top these adorable ball-points:
spring flowers bring ... love letters?
Adding a little something ‘extra’ ups the ante quite a bit. At Momo we like to embellish letters and gifts. Cute, whimsical tape? Retro french-inspired stickers? These make things pretty much instantly adorable.

everyone loves stickers!

modes of transportation for your letter?
If the nostalgic part of you misses letter writing ... the physicality of it — the texture of the paper, the glide of a pen or the faint scratch of a pencil, the satisfaction of sealing an envelope and pressing a stamp onto its corner ... or if you simply want to brighten someone’s day, consider reviving the ancient tradition of letter-writing.

Valentine Confusion!

There are a lot of conflicting stories about the origin of Valentine's Day. A LOT. So many, in fact, that this Momogirl blogger has entirely scrapped the idea of a Fun History Lesson today.

It is much simpler to write about some of the wonderful things you can find at Momo for your sweetie. (not that we think you need help brainstorming...but a few ideas are always nice!)

Jewelry is lovely, ANY time of year. Momo carries many local designers like Flora and Fawn and Shelli Markee.

For the Momo man: award-winning  skin care products by Billy Jealousy. We even have a Variety Pack for those who are indecisive.

...and there are things that are just cute. Robot Clocks? Yes please. High five!

This rainbow of hand-woven silk scarves from Turkey was too luscious not to post. Hand-spun, hand-dyed, hand-woven - a labor of love to share with someone you love.

Need more suggestions? A helping hand, a subtle nudge? Pop on down to Momo - we are always happy to be of assistance. :)

In lieu of a history lesson, I'll leave you with these entertaining factoids:
3% of Valentine's Day cards/gifts are for pets.
Teachers receive more Valentine's Day cards than anyone else.
Men typically spend 2x what women do on V-Day...
However, 85% of valentines are purchased by women.

The key to someone's heart...

An Artist’s Gift to Grandma

Meet Little Shirley. Topping our list of more-thoughtful-than expensive gifts, this hand-thrown clay vase is crafted locally by Lauren Burman to honor her best-friend grandmother who recently passed away from cancer. We first spotted the demure vessel perched on the window sill of our new favorite office-on-the-way-to-Momo, Cortona Cafe (2425 East Union Street; 206.327.9728; cortonacafe.com). A quick Google search lead us to the truly touching story, and now Momo has the honor of bringing you these personal vases. The tiny treasure measures no more than three-inches high and comes in 12 tertiary colors, making it a fresh compliment to a Seattle spring blossom.
