Get Stoned At Momo

The healing powers of stones have been known to many cultures across the world and through the ages. From ancient China to the Egyptians, Romans, Indians and beyond — all believed that stones have magical and mystical properties. Interestingly, the qualities attributed to each stone are fairly consistent across the globe.

In these troubled and often contentious times, we at Momo feel like we can all use a little extra tranquility and positivity in our lives, which is why we’ve chosen to focus on these particular gems in our jewelry collection.

Labradorite is a member of the feldspar family and is best known for its light refracting qualities, which produce shimmery, iridescent flashes of color. These flashes can be so otherworldly and brilliant that the Inuit have a legend stating that the Northern Lights are trapped within.
Labradorite is best known for repelling negativity and aiding in bolstering strength in the face of negativity.

Ruby is considered a useful stone for repelling people who suck your energy, staving off nightmares and insecurity as well as increasing the resilience of the body, mind and spirit. At one point in time, rubies were considered to be more valuable than diamonds. It is said that Kublai Khan once offered an entire city in exchange for a large ruby.

Chrysoprase, with its varying shades of luminous green, experienced a revival (inspired by the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb and bejeweled ornamentation within) during the Art Nouveau period. It was also reportedly the favorite stone of Alexander the Great. Chrysoprase targets depression and anxiety while promoting hope and joy.

If you’re feeling like you, too, could use a boost in positive energy, Momo has a wide assortment of cheery little gems waiting to adorn you.* (Alternatively, our neighbors up at Trichome can help you with any other stone-y quest — tell ’em Momo sent ya!)

* The fine print: some of these beauties left the shop before this post but Momo Mama decided to run it anyway because it’s so fun, meaningful and informative (thank you, Angela). But there’s always something new and alluring in the stone sector, especially from locally made Little Teal, so please come and check it out when you need a little self love, especially during the holidays!

Season-spanning Kurti

Dolma kurti tunic in Orient Red with black accents.
Derived from the Persian language, the word “kurta” (or kurti, when worn by women), means ‘a collarless shirt.’ Originally from India, the simple cotton top was always a staple garment of the country’s peasant class. But international designers caught on to the stylish comfort and flattering silhouette, creating kurti for movie stars and runway models, elevating the humble tunic to aspirational attire.

Today this classic has come to represent easy elegance — and in our opinion, ideal ‘transitional’ clothing. Floaty lightweight cotton is perfect for the remaining hot days of summer, while the loose fit and long sleeves make it an excellent piece for layering when the weather cools. Pair with lightweight cotton capris for the hot days, or a cami, jeans and an over-sized cozy cardigan for the coming chill of fall.

At Momo, we offer a number of affordable kurti under $60: three from Dolma Handicrafts, hand-made, ethical and sustainable 100% cotton printed with bold, ethnic-flavored patterns. And one from New York’s Meg Cohen, also pure cotton, with a dramatic marbleized pattern in shades of navy, dark mauve and slate blue.

We love Dolma’s take on a traditional Japanese pattern.

Ever tasteful Meg Cohen's more subdued kurti.

Season-spanning clothing is an essential in Seattle, where spring flows into summer into fall, often gently and over a long period of time. Kurti tunics will add a touch of polish to your ‘Seattle practical’ wardrobe, starting today and well into tomorrow.

Momo ❤ Local: Sarsen and 8telier

Momo would like to introduce you to two of our newest local designers: Sarsen and 8telier. Both are not only nascent at Momo, but also as their own brands of professional clothing design. We’re really excited to be one of the first (of many, no doubt!) boutiques to have their clothing grace our racks, and to be supporting local talent.

The creative mind behind Sarsen is Heather Blanchard. A visual merchandiser for Anthropologie, she has a keen eye for harmonious balance and attention to detail. Her takes on outerwear are both functional (think dense wool blends, cozy plush cottons) and feminine, with details like pointed cuffs and romantic oversized hoods. Heather was featured in the Bellevue Collection’s Independent Runway Show in 2013 – we’ll undoubtedly see her work on the runway again.

Husband and wife duo Jean and Craig are the masterminds behind 8telier. Their tagline is “Elevated Essentials” and it’s obvious how their clothing reflects this philosophy. Many of their pieces can be worn multiple ways for entirely different looks. Convertible clothing: perfect for the practical-minded Seattleite. You'll find a capsule collection of our favorite styles here at Momo. If you’re craving a peek at their full collection, check out their brand new (opening today!) store on the first floor of Pacific Place. Congratulations!

Make a trip to the ID for a delicious meal, then pop by Momo to check out some terrific newcomers to the Seattle fashion world. We promise you’ll be as delighted as we are!
