Harumi K : Love

Harumi K designer Sherry!

Meet Momo newcomer Harumi K aka Sherry Koyama. Harumi K clothing was borne from Sherry’s desire to create garments that are versatile, comfortable and low-maintenance. Featuring modern lines and textural fabrics (which are made with American grown cotton!), Harumi K pieces are flattering and easy-to-wear — and don’t we love that? Bonus: they transition beautifully from work to play, as well as from season to season, a major plus in our somewhat-fair-weather city!

Sherry will be one of the trio of designers we’re hosting during next week’s trunk show. Also joining the fun are local jeweler Angela Muhlnickel of Little Teal, and Ursa Caratolo, curator of stylish Italian handbags. They’re happy to share a few tips for transitioning into fall. Here are the deets:

Fashion Fresh From Paris

Momo Girl Angela (moi)  has recently returned from France. I noted some Parisian fashion trends that I thought I’d share with everyone. I loved the fact that they were 100% wearable, and would easily translate to Seattle. Keeping it short and sweet, here they are!

  • Long, straight wool coats. Solid colors, leaning toward tertiary.

  • Skinny jeans on EVERYONE. Even skinny slacks on businessmen.

  • Blanket scarves in mid-weight fabrics.

  • Bright red lipstick for all!

Call for Entries: Spam-O-Rama Returns!

So, think you make a pretty mean musubi? Meet your match during the revival of the Momo Spam-O-Rama Musubi Making Contest!

What: 4th Not-So-Annual Momo Spam-O-Rama
When: Part of Hai! Japantown, Saturday, August 25 at 6:00 pm
Where: Chiyo's Garden at 6th and Jackson in Japantown
How (to Enter): Email lala@momoseattle.com or call 206-329-4736 with name/contact info by August 22
Why: Cuz you love Spam Musubi!

Here’s the two-scoops on contest rules:
1) You must use three key ingredients, Spam, rice, and nori. Otherwise, add what you like.
Your creation will be judged on three criteria:
- Taste (more ono, more better)
- Presentation (too pretty to eat!)
- Originality (whodda thunk?)
2) Make at least four samples for the judging (and more for the hungry crowd!)
3) Make presentation tray for the crowd to ogle (and sample, afterward)
4) Bring your musubi masterpiece to Momo, ready to eat by 4:00 pm, Saturday, August 25th
5) Check FB: MOMOseattle and Japantown Seattle for future details on the day.

Traditional, wildly creative and everything in between: we want to see it all! Just as long as it’s super ono.

Fancy.

Hello Kitty in her tastiest form.

Totoro musubi? Yes, please!

Hawaii-tastic pupu platter.

For the uninitiated, here’s a link to a classic musubi recipe: http://www.mylilikoikitchen.com/2015/08/12/spam-musubi/

See you (and your delectable musubi) in a month!

Hawaiian Butter Mmmmochi!

Butter mochi. If you are familiar with this hugely popular Hawaiian favorite, you know that it’s essentially a baked custard that tastes like cubes of heaven. Not familiar? Get ready for a toothsome treat. Pleasingly sweet, the slightly caramelized crust is contrasted by a smooth, rich and chewy inside — all the characteristics you crave in a decadent indulgence ... a gluten-free indulgence!

Momo now makes it easy to experience this island delight with Hawaii’s Best Butter Mochi Mix. Just add water, eggs and butter, put it in the oven and presto! Luscious no-fail dessert, perfect to take along to the season’s potluck gatherings. The most difficult part is deciding whether or not you want to share.

We stock the classic flavor as well as a brownie-inspired mix for the chocoholics in your life. Either way, you’ll say, “Stay so ono!”

Momo for Mom-O

Does Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 8th!) have you stupefied, stumped, and stymied? Are you itching for ideas? Soliciting suggestions? Hoping for hints? Momo can come to your Mom’s Day rescue!

Roses from author Toni Yuly’s yard. Thank you, Toni!
Sweet and Simple: colorful little vases from Middle Kingdom, made of fine porcelain. Just add water (and a flower or three).

Uncomplicated Color: easy-to-wear pops of color from local jeweler Flora and Fawn. We appreciate that these cheery enamel necklaces go with anything.

Timeless Elegance: lustrous pink, peach or silvery-mauve freshwater Hawaiian pearls for the Mom who loves a classic look.

Aromatic Abode: Mixt candles come pre-wrapped in playfully patterned Tyvek. Our fragrances range from  freshly-mown grass to a rich, deep sandalwood.

Perhaps this post has your wheels turning ... and if you’re still feeling a bit flummoxed, come on down! We have lots of delightful gifty things — more thoughtful than expensive — that any mom would enjoy. And, as always, we will gift-wrap in our usual fun and creative way. Happy Mother’s Day to the queen of your household!

Count the Ways to Count Your Days

As incredible as it is to contemplate, we are nearing the end of 2015.

Now, we know that everyone has calendars on their personal devices — computers, Smart phones, Google Glass (hahaha)...but there is much to be said for a lovely, old-school calendar. Momo currently has three unique and attractive options for you to choose from, two from local designers and the third from Japan.

In 2005, Ilee Papergoods designer Ja Teuber made her first ready-made product: her hand-printed month-by-month calendar. It was such a success that she continues to make these to this day. The attention to detail, beautiful prints and local/handmade appeal has made this a very popular gift — some fans make a tradition of buying one every year.

Another fun, compact calendar is “Type Riot,” designed and produced by Paper Hammer Studios (you can visit their shop on Second Avenue). Established by the delightful Ed Marquand, Paper Hammer set out to revitalize Tieton, located on the far western edge of the Yakima Valley. Today, a collective of businesses called Mighty Tieton has awakened this tiny town by connecting creative urban professionals with studio and production space, unused buildings and local production resources.

Perfect for your graphic designer or font-geek friend, this one also comes with a storage/display case.

Last but not least, another holiday gift favorite: linen tea towel calendars from Tokyo’s Fog Linen Work. How often does one encounter an item that is both completely practical and utterly whimsical? Not very, which is one of the reasons we adore these. Choose from DIY birds, cats in windows and a plethora of pears. Whatever your preference, mark your calendars for a stylish way to welcome the new year.

All, made of fine Lithuanian linen.

Sunny Sun Bonnets for Baby

Seattle is having an identity crisis this summer and has convinced itself that it's Arizona. Or Nevada. Or Mercury. In any case, this is definitely a year to protect your kiddo’s delicate face from harsh solar rays. Just in time: brand new baby bonnets from local designer Plastic Pony, maker of Momo’s sweet baby kimonos.

Made of adorable Japanese fabrics, the sun hats are 100% cotton, have an adjustable tie and are reversible to a bright white (most effective for reflecting the scorching sun). Available in two sizes: 3-9 months and 9-18 months. And at $20, they’re perfectly priced for a casual baby gift.

Tis the season for the outdoors. Whether you’re lounging at a bbq or catching some free summertime tunes at Volunteer Park, help keep the tots comfy and burn-free with a local, hand-made, super-kawaii cap.
